FREEFALL by Lily Iona Mackenzie

Another magical, mystical novel by McKenzie!

As I had the great pleasure of reviewing Mackenzie’s first two novels, FLING, and CURVA PELAGROSA, I am now thoroughly convinced that she’s a 21st century literary muse who is determined to create or, probably, channel worlds within worlds, layers of reality that are mystical and magical, forcing the reader into and beyond the very depths of what it means to be human, ultimately examining challenges, joys, tragedies, unfulfilled dreams and others yet to be realized.

Her writing is a medley of metaphor and poetry, expressing our fears about living and dying and all that’s in-between. Some reviewers have referred to FREEFALL as a coming of age novel of old friends, re-uniting as they’re approaching sixty and have agreed to celebrate their birthdays by questioning their beliefs about everything, each in her own way: aging, religion, sexuality, art, and death itself.

Tillie Bloom, the main character, is brilliantly conceived as an installation artist. As the women weave their way throughout the narrative examining conscious goals as well as unconscious needs, Tillie explains what she does as an artist. As she does so, we can’t help but appreciate Mackensie’s accomplishment in this “freefall” of her characters.

Tillie explains: “ I create spaces you can enter. Interiors. I find a lot of different stuff and put it into a new context—empty rooms, sometimes museums or galleries. . . . . . . I usually find abandoned buildings or other structures and play with them. Transform. Create stories and objects I find or make. You walk around inside these places and become more conscious of where you are. What you’re seeing.”

I trust Makenzie will continue the roll she’s on and will not stop spinning her yarns, entertaining us and always leaving us wanting more. In the words of Fredrick Nietsche, “We have art so that we shall not die of reality.”

Bravo to Lily Iona Mackenzie whose artful novel FREEFALL, has created another marvelous read!
